Our weekend

Fun with shaving cream
Shaving cream slide

One of my friends makes fun of me for dressing Henry like this when we’re at the pool. But it’s a whole lot easier than chasing him down and trying to get sunscreen on him every hour or so. And he doesn’t complain.

Playing video games at Best Buy

Climbing on a clam. Henry’s favorite part of the aquarium is the play equipment… same thing with the zoo… He’d be just as happy at the playground, I’m the one that gets bored.

The riverfront reeks of crude oil right now. You can see the containment boom for the oil spill here:

At the Cafe du Monde there were two mimes having a photo shoot, complete with prop beignets. Then they sat down at a table and ate some real ones.

Henry fell asleep at dinner:

New sewing machine

My oldest sewing machine (and the only one that was not buried in our storage unit awaiting the day when I might once again have a dedicated space to craft in) is dead.  It was a good simple little machine that made it all the way through college, despite the marathon sewing sessions and the flat out abuse it recieved (bustle gowns have lots of layers… that’s all I’m saying).  Anyway, it’s dead and apparently would cost more to repair than I orginally paid for it, so I bought a new machine.  No I didn’t really need it.  Yes I have two perfectly good sewing machines buried in the storage unit, but really I just wanted it, flat out, no excuses.  All the shiny little buttons and things are making me happy.  And I can sew without the pedal!  Without the pedal!!!  Whoever heard of such a thing.  It’s awesome.

And here is the inaugural project, this cute little Amy Butler sunhat that I’ve been covetting for a while and just in time for spring:

Now maybe I won’t have to coat my face in sunblock every 30 minutes at the pool this summer.

Anyway, I love my new machine.  I haven’t chosen what to make next.  It’s between a new valance for H’s room or this Amy Butler bag.

Along with my camera vanishing, so had H’s favorite shoes.  The only shoes he wears without complaints.  Most beloved elephant shoes:

So today after soccer class (and the screaming tantrum that occurred on the way to soccer because he didn’t want to wear his only other pair of shoes that fit) we trekked down to our local kids shoe store and tried on 14 (not an exaggeration) different pairs of shoes before we found one pair that H would consent to keeping on his feet for more than a nanosecond.  I’m not crazy about them, though the lack of a screaming tantrum appealed to me.  And they do pass my super-flexy shoe test, so we left the store with new shoes.

As Murphy’s law dictates, I later found H’s most beloved elephant shoes and along with them… my camera!  *cue choir of angels*  It was in the same bag as H’s shoes, of course.

And my minivan comes home tomorrow.  So happy!  And after reading the damage summary from my body shop I’m so grateful that I don’t have to pay for any of it.  The repairs cost more than I currently owe on the car.  You could in fact buy the rental car I’m currently driving for the cost of repairing my minivan… apparently those power doors are really tricky to fix.  When I spoke to the mechanic they were in the process of detailing my car.  The silver lining in my whole car saga is that my car will be much much cleaner than it has been in many moons.

10 things I’m happy about right now

That first post was somewhat of a downer, so here are some things that are great about life right now,

10.  There is a new season of America’s Next Top Model.  It’s trash television, but I can’t get enough.

9.  My husband makes a big batch of tabbouleh for me once a week.  I love the stuff, but lack the patience for all that chopping.  C does not understand my fascination with it, but makes it for me anyway.  And for once a food that I love is not all that bad for me.

8.  We’re out of debt.  Well, we have a mortgage and a car payment, but our “consumer debt” is paid off.  Finally.

7.  My daisy van!  I’ve always wanted cute daisies all over my car and now I have them!  If only I could find those daisy hubcaps I saw on a VW bug somewhere… and have them actually fit my wheels.

6.  The paint colors on the walls in the condo.  I love every single one of them and wouldn’t change a thing.  Considering that C and I agree on the colors, this is a miraculous thing.

5.  Tivo – Best thing ever, especially when we have an erratic evening schedule at the theatre.

4.  Hand embroidery projects.  Most of my craft/sewing stuff is packed away in storage waiting for a bigger house to spread out in, so hand embroidery is keeping my crafting brain busy.  I’m happily stitching away on the Pleasant Kitchen Dishtowels from Alicia at Posie Gets Cozy.

3. The lavender sachets that I’ve tucked all over my house.

2.  Real live friends that I can drop in on spontaneously and who have me over to dinner during the week when C is working.

1.  Waking up in the morning to Baby Bear smiling and saying “Look mama, it’s a bright sunny day” reguardless of the actual weather outside.  To Baby Bear it’s always a bright sunny day.  I strive to see the world through his eyes.
